July Meeting 2016

Another fun month of show and tell, visiting and eating for the Material Girls of Idaho. Thank you, Maurene for hosting our group.  Next month (August) we are meeting at Caren's on the 31st. Also Jeri is hoping to have all of us at her cabin the third week in October for a Material Girls retreat. Check your calendars.
Here are the pics:

Susan showed us recent quilt tops she is working on
Houses...
Waltzing With Bears pattern...wall quilt

 Close up of quilt top
Jean made this coiled purse
She took a class to learn to make this bag at Quilt Crossing.
Everyone admired it immensely.

Corrie made this half square triangle quilt.
Corrie also made this top...great colors--but, antlers coming out of women's heads!?
Corrie made these "bagettes"

These gray, red, white and black squares are made by Diane S. They are from the Splendid Sampler quilt a long, which is sponsored on line by Pat Sloan. The upper right block is paper pieced. The lower block is foundation pieced made of selvages.
Diane made this cute dress for her granddaughter. It is a pattern from a book.
Diane created this pincushion from inspiration on the crazy mom quilts blog.
It lies along the front of the sewing machine, very handy spot for sticking pins while sewing. It is filled with crushed walnut shells. The dimensions are 2.5" by 8"
This pincushion was a free kit from a quilt store in Logan, Utah, during the Utah shop hop. Diane was able to get this kit and sew it up.  Again, stuffed with crushed walnut shells.
 Julia made this Watcha bag
Here are some of the free row by row patterns given out at local quilt shops

Jeri saw a fun quilt at the Logan quilt show called a 3-portrait quilt. Here are the directions for making the 3-n-1 quilt. Or you can check it out here.
Monica used all scraps and fat quarters to make this quilt
 Maurene made this baby quilt
Maurene is finishing this quilt from a top she received and will be donating it to a girls home.
Darla showed us how she puts satin binding on quilts. She buys the satin binding and attaches it using a decorative stitch on her machine and zigzags the mitered corners.  Thanks for the instruction on that!

Yummy Lunch

Cranberry Slaw
6 cups shredded cabbage,  1 cup dried cranberries,1 cup  chopped walnuts (optional). 1/2 cup red onion chopped, 1/2 cup celery,  1 cup sliced red pepper.
Dressing:    1/2 cup mayo 2 T deli mustard.  2T honey. 1/2 tsp salt  1/2 tsp fresh pepper.
Tip for watermelon that isn't sweet, just add a little sugar on top. It dissolves right in and sweetens it up.
Paradise Cake (not shown)
1 can mandarin oranges with juice
4 eggs
1/2 c. oil
1 pkg white or yellow cake mix with pudding
Mix together. Oranges will break up. Add one pkg white or yellow cake mix with pudding to above. Then divide so you have a two layer cake (Maurene uses 9x13 so the layers are the same)
Bake at 350 for 15 min or until done.
Topping
20oz. pineapple, crushed with juice
3 oz. pkg instant vanilla pudding
8oz. cool whip
Mix pineapple with pudding, then fold in cool whip and spread on cake. Can add coconut.
