July Meeting

Rachel presented her Friendship Block, which will be made of Civil War Replica fabrics.
Small pink squares of fabric were collected to piece two little girls quilts. We will eventually tie them and present them to a local family who was involved in a devastating accident this Spring.

Happy Hooker Rugs were the theme for our meeting. We met at Diane Spackman's home this month. She showed the method of making rag (strip) rugs using the Locker Hook tool and canvas. This tool resembles a crochet hook with a large needle eye at the opposite end. Strips of fabric are cut 1.25 inches wide, attached together with a cool little loop through knot and then looped through the canvas and secured with cotton string. Everyone went home with the tool and a small piece of canvas to perhaps make a hot pot table pad. Hopefully some will be complete next meeting and brought to be shown!!!

As usual share and show was enjoyable. Kristina told us how she transferred a quote to fabric using her computer and printer. It was a great quote. Lenette showed her very cute baby boy boat quilt. It has prairie points in the border which are "two toned." The waves of water are depicted with blue rick rack! The pink Bulls Eye quilt you can see in the slide show was made by Diane S. Lori S. showed two very cute strip 'quilt as you go' baby quilts. Lori was able to attend the big quilt extravaganza in Long Beach Ca. last week. Rachel told of her adventures visiting quilting stores in neighboring states this summer and showed a neat star quilt hanger. Carolanna showed the cute brown and pink big and little quilts you see in the slide show. She has her own quilting machine at her house! Yeah! Jeanie and Maurene have completed the same applique block of the month quilts.
So pretty. Maurene and her grandkids have been sewing theVintage Baby Squares quilt.
Diane B. showed us her great patriotic table runner! Monica brought something none of us have ever seen! A completed quilt (which is darling) attached to an iron plate display rack. The rack is turned upside down! there are ties holding the quilt. See the slide show! :) Jan Liefson showed some real cute counted cross stitch squares that are to be completed. She petitioned the group for ideas! I'm sure she'll bring them back next month all completed!:) Kathi showed a neat church bag she made of placemats. Hope you enjoy our slide shows!!!
We enjoyed sharing ideas and patterns.
Refreshments were: Southwestern Salad with Cilantro Lime Vingerette, flavored water and minty cupcakes! Lenette and Lori S. were the winners of the doors prizes!

June Mtg II

June 2008-Summer Salad,Coconut Brunch Bread

Summer Salad

1 head romaine
1 head red leaf
1 carton sliced mushrooms
3/4 cup montery jack cheese
toss together

Top with sliced strawberries and blueberries


dressing:


1 cup salad oil
1/2 red wine vinegar
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp white pepper
4 cloves garlic -pressed

Place all ingredients in blender
* make dressing the day before


Coconut Brunch Bread

4 eggs
2 c sugar
1 c oil
2 tsp coconut flavoring
3 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 c buttermilk
1 c flaked coconut
1 c nuts - I used pecans

Beat the eggs, add sugar, oil and coconut flavoring beat until fluffy
Mix together flour salt, soda and baking powder,
Add dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk
Fold in coconut and nuts.
Spoon into 3 medium size bread pans that have been sprayed
Bake for 40-50 minutes at 325

Pour hot sauce over warm loaves and let stand for 4 hours before
removing from pans


Sauce

1 c sugar
1/2 cup water
2 T butter

Boil together for 5 mins
remove from heat

Add 1 tsp coconut flavoring

June Mtg

This slide show has the first half of our show and tell. More pics will be coming later.
We met at Diane B.'s and had a great turn out. A special welcome to Karen, Kim, Heather and Kristina who are new to the group. Karen has been quilting for many years and shared quite a few of her fun quilts with us. She had some fun ideas and projects for our future meetings too. Heather and Kristina are beginners and we hope we motivated them and didn't overwhelm them with our usual quilt enthusiasm. We have all levels of quilters in our group which is what makes it fun.
Friendship blocks were given to Mary this month. Each of us made a 12" block of our own design using colors from a swatch of fabric Mary gave to us last month. From the looks of what she received, it's going to be a beautiful keepsake quilt.
Jeanene shared with us her happy/sad news. Her house finally sold after 18 months and she will be moving to Utah next month. We are really going to miss her. Her quilts are always works of art and done to perfection. She says she's going to start Material Girls II in Utah. We love you Jeanene and wish you much happiness in your new home. We'll drop in on your MGII meetings when we're in Utah for visits, so let us know when and where.
Our project at Diane's was making an American flag out of torn fabric strips. Watch for pictures of our flags to be posted soon. As usual, Diane treated us all to a scrumptious lunch. Diane's recipes will be also posted soon as she was flooded with requests. Her recipes alone could make a best selling book, but Rachel has an idea for our group to make some money with our recipes and quilts. The money we make will fund our dream quilting getaway which is a Material Girls cruise-either to the Caribbean or the Mediterranean. We're not picky!

Next month we meet at Diane S.'s home on July 30th.

Maurine asked me a little while ago to post a picture of myPlane block but I kept forgetting. Finally I remembered so here it is. I'm not really sure what we are going to do at our meeting next week so I was thinking about working on some paper piecing since some of you have been a little nervous about the block. What do you think?

April Mtg with Karen MacCarter

As you can see from the slide show below, we had a great meeting this month. What's better than having an entire show and tell meeting! Karen MacCarter, a quilter since the 70's, brought several of her beautiful quilts and shared many of her experiences with us. Each quilt was truly a work of art as well as a work of love. Karen gave our group some fun ideas for future meetings by showing us quilts that had been made as friendship quilts by fellow quilters in some of the quilt groups she belongs to. By the sounds of the ooohs and aaaahs, I know we'll be discussing what quilts we want to make as a group at our next meeting. Her themed friendship quilts, i.e.fall colors, Christmas fabrics were especially full of sentiment.

Monica also brought the completed Walker quilt that many of us in the group help make. A little over a year ago, the Walker family tragically lost their 3 oldest children in a car accident as they were driving on their way to school. Two other children were in the car with them and also died. The entire Boise area was in mourning for these 2 families and it was a very difficult time. What made it even more tragic for the Walkers was the fact that they had lost their little 2 year only a couple years before in an accident. Many of us in our group have been friends with and known the Walkers for many years. Nearing the year anniversary of their children's deaths, Monica helped us start planning a love quilt for their family. In the slide show below you can see a picture of the quilt with a few of us who had worked on it. We will be delivering it later this month. Our prayers, tears and love will always be with their sweet family.

Our auction quilt was also completed and shown this month-it's the pink and red heart quilt. This is the quilt that we are donating to the Komen Breast Cancer Auction. Our quilts last year brought in good money for the foundation and we are hoping the same for this year. A few of us will be attending the dinner and auction on May 7th.

Lori had the friendship block. We'll all be paper piecing an airplane block that she designed. She showed us what the completed quilt will look like and we know her little Corey will love it.

All in all, we had a fun meeting, learned a lot, shared much, laughed, chatted and ate. By the way, I'll be sending the recipe for the Gooey Butter Bars to everyone via email.

Next meeting is at Lori Schroath's on May 28th and Mary has the friendship block. See you there!

Almost Raggedy Hearts

The Raggedy Hearts Quilt is just sitting, waiting to have the binding stitched down AND to be 'washed' and dryed for it's finishing touch. It's looking pretty so far. Thanks to Maurene for sewing the blocks together and Carolanna for quilting it on her new machine!

Materials Girls meeting for this month is Wednesday, April 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Kathi Thompson's home. We are having a guest speaker, Karen MacCarter. Karen is a great quilt maker and appliquer. She titled herself, The Plaid Queen several years ago, even making a quilt portraying herself. Karen moved to Eagle a few years back, loves to quilt and belongs to quilt guilds in three different states. She will show us many quilts and tell us of her quilting journey. She will give us some tips. Come prepared with any questions you may have. Be sure to bring your completed items to share. Invite a friend to come hear Karen speak!

March Meeting 2008

We met today at Lorna Fisher's home. Present were: Lorna, Jeanene, Sandy, Kathi, Maurene, Jeanie, Jeri, Laurie, Rachel, Carolanna and Lori. It was our big work day and we were able to assemble 64 rag heart blocks for our breast cancer auction quilt. Everyone brought cut out hearts in reds and pinks and thanks to the great organizational skills of Rachel, everything went very smoothly as we spread out and worked in Lorna's large basement quilt room. We laid out some of the blocks to get a sneak preview and it's going to look darling.
Maurene took the blocks home to sew together and Lorna has volunteered to long arm quilt it. The dinner and auction are going to be held on May 7 and tickets are $25. We're hoping to fill a table of ten this year. Lorna treated us to a tasty lunch(pasta salad, taco soup) and Rachel made dessert(mint brownies). Most of us wanted the recipes so we'll get them posted later. Lorna also introduced us to a new drink-Chlorophyll. Yes, that's actually the name and it actually was green. She said it's good for us, so we'll just have to take her word for it. It was different than anything I've ever tried and it had a fun almost minty aftertaste to it. Thank you Lorna for helping us step out of our comfort zones of our usual water and lemonade.

Also our Show and Tell was motivating as usual. Rachel finished her top made with the same 3-D pinwheel pattern that Carolanna had us make for her friendship quilt and she had enough left over to make a large pillow. Carolanna wins the award for finishing her friendship quilt the fastest. We gave her the blocks just last month and today she showed us her finished quilt. Even the prairie points on the border are 3-D. We all signed the back of the quilt for her. She also finished another "5" quilt. Jeri also showed 2 pinwheel quilts that are going to grandbabies. How lucky they are! This new line of fabric by Sandy Gervais of Moda has motivated several of us to create fun quilts from it. Jeri also finished a Trip Around the World. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of the back fabric, it actually contained all the colors of the front. Lori made the baby blanket that Diane demonstrated to us last year. She had enough left over to make a pillow case too. She also made a fun pillow from fabrics she bought in a "grab bag" at Quilt Crossing in Boise. Check out all the pictures in the previous post.

Jeanene gave us the pattern and swatches for her friendship quilt. She had extra patterns if you'd like to make some blocks for her. She also donated a "Love Quilt" for the domestic courts charity in California.

Sorry we missed a few of you today, but next month's meeting will be at Rachel's on April 30th where she will show us how to make Penny Rugs.

Fundraiser quilt pattern

This is what the pattern looks like for our fundraiser quilt. Each member should bring 5 hearts of each of the three different sizes. The colors are reds, pinks and creams. If you can drag this pattern onto your desktop, you'll need to blow it up to the size of a sheet of paper in order to have the right dimensions.

Show and Tell Feb 2008

Here's a quilt Kathi made from the book Flowering Quilts by Kim Schaefer. It was on the front cover and thought it was so cute that she just had to make it. The buttons add so much charm and it was fun using up lots of scraps.

The group of quilts below are "Love Quilts" that we collect and donate each month to the Family/Domestic courts in Orange County California. The quilts are given to children (ages 0-18) who have become custody of the state. Sherry's Young Women group made
3 of them this month.

Show and Tell 2004 or so

These are some pictures I had from a meeting a few years ago, so I thought I'd go ahead and post them so we can have a little history. More info about each item will be added later.

February Meeting

On Wed., February 27, 2008, Material Girls Quilt Group met at Jeanene Flake's home. Those in attendance were: Jeanie Farnworth, Maurene Lamm, Laurie Blackner, Diane Beagley, Sandy Cantrell, Monica Campbell, Jodie Hugentobler, Rachel Lamm, Carolanna Mellen, Jeri Moore, Renee Rees, Diane Spackman, Sherry Stafford, Kathi Thompson, Mary Lloyd, Jan Leifson and Lori Schroath. A bag or two were shown, as were some beautiful small quilts, a crazy quilt, and ideas for quilts.
Monica showed a completed quilt top of blocks we all made and turned in at the January meeting. This quilt is done in browns, greens, golds, blues, reds and creams. When it is completed it will be presented to the Brandon and Tamara Walker family. Lorna volunteered to quilt it on her home quilting machine.
We turned in our friendship blocks of pinwheels to Carolanna Mellen. It will make up to be a cute quilt of bright three dimensional pinwheels.
We are planning to make a Ragged Hearts quilt to give to a cancer research group for auction to raise money.
Several are making a Snowman Wall Quilt. We all brought 150 3" squares of 2 different flannels to exchange for the patchwork portion of the snowman quilt. We laid the squares on the kitchen table, walked around the table and picked up the squares until we all held a big handful. The patterns for the snowmen heads and noses were available to trace.

Jeanene served yummy lemon bars and ultimate brownies. Thank You Jeanene.

Our next meeting will be held on Wed., March 19th at Lorna Fisher's home.

Friendship Squares~Pinwheels

Three dimensional pinwheels are our most recent friendship block. Three sets are pictured, we each created one set for Carolanna. She gave us the blue with print, from there we added brights for the four patch and folded triangles. The extra matching prairie points will be used in the edging of the quilt. These worked up real cute. Watch for the completed quilt...
